Minister Mackenzie hands over Brackengate decision letters to minibus taxi operators
Today, the Western Cape Minister of Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie handed over 106 positive decision letters to minibus taxi operators who have applied for an operating licence in the Brackengate area.
This milestone marks a successful outcome for the Minibus Taxi Task Team established by Minister Mackenzie in February 2023, comprising representatives from the Western Cape Government and City of Cape Town, together with the leadership of SANTACO-WC (South African National Taxi Council – Western Cape). The aim of the Task Team, which meets regularly, is to work together to address specific challenges faced by the minibus taxi industry so people can get to work with safe, affordable and reliable transport.
Minister Mackenzie said, “These new operating licences will enable the applicants – from six different taxi associations – to operate to and from the Brackengate Industrial area, where there has been a noted influx of job opportunities. This will better serve citizens and the economy while staving off tensions in the industry. I am thrilled that the Minibus Taxi Task Team has enabled this significant breakthrough on the long-awaited Brackengate operating licences. By putting our heads together as provincial and local government, and working with the industry, this progress will ultimately improve mobility options for commuters.”
At the handover, which took place symbolically on the Brackengate route, Minister Mackenzie and Western Cape Mobility Department officials were joined by leadership from Santaco-WC and the associations receiving the decision letters.
