Free vehicle testing for scholar transport operators in Western Cape

Transport Month Safety Campaign

Media release by Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape Minister of Mobility

Today, I visited the free vehicle testing which is currently being offered to Scholar Transport operators at our Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. I was joined by Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, to see first-hand how the Western Cape Government is assisting the transport industry to enhance safety during our ‘October Transport Month’ programme.

More than 30 Scholar Transport vehicles – including minibuses, midibuses, and 7-seaters – have gone through the Vehicle Testing Centre in the last two days. The checks include brakes, tyres, windscreen, windscreen wipers, electrical, exhaust, licence disc, cv joints, suspension, and the warning device.

The school holiday is the ideal time to check the roadworthiness of these vehicles and I am pleased to see Scholar Transport operators taking advantage of this opportunity. The vehicle testing forms part of the Mobility Department’s continued outreach to the industry to ensure children get to and from school safely.

In addition to the free vehicle testing, our Road Safety Management team was on site engaging Scholar Transport operators and sharing road safety awareness material.

The Department is working hard to make mobility safer across all modes of transport. We need all road users to join this mission by taking personal responsibility for reducing the number of traffic fatalities in our province.
