183 Arrested for drunk driving as Western Cape braces for Easter traffic surge

As the Easter weekend approaches, the Western Cape Government is urging all road users to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and take personal responsibility to help save lives on our roads.

Between 31 March and 13 April, a total of 183 people were arrested for driving under the influence. This statistic highlights a deeply concerning reality and comes just days before the expected spike in Easter weekend travel.

“The Easter period is traditionally marked by increased traffic volumes on Western Cape roads. We are calling on every road user to make responsible choices - whether you’re driving, walking, or cycling. One bad decision can have devastating consequences,” said Muneera Allie, Western Cape Mobility Department’s Head of Communication.

The most common causes of road incidents in the province include: driving under the influence; reckless and negligent driving; speeding; distracted driving and fatigue.

Traffic volumes are expected to peak on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, as travellers head to their holiday destinations. Monday is also expected to see high volumes of traffic as people return home.

Driving under the influence is both illegal and extremely dangerous. If a traffic officer suspects intoxication, a breathalyser test may be administered. If alcohol levels exceed the legal limit, the driver will be arrested immediately. The legal alcohol limit in South Africa is 0.05g per 100ml of blood for regular drivers and 0.02g per 100ml of blood for professional drivers (e.g., those with a Professional Driving Permit). This roughly equates to one unit of alcohol, such as a small glass of wine or one beer. However, many factors -including weight, food intake, and metabolism - affect how long alcohol remains in the body. Exceeding the limit can result in fines, imprisonment, and a criminal record.

“Driving under the influence, speeding, or overtaking recklessly not only endangers your life, it endangers the lives of everyone around you. We have always taken a zero-tolerance approach not just over holidays such as Easter, but throughout the year. Our Traffic Law Enforcement officers will be visible and active across the province to protect lives and enforce the law,” said Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku.

In preparing for the high travel period, the Western Cape Government offered free 10-point vehicle checks at various testing centres, providing drivers with an opportunity to have their vehicle’s fitness tested ahead of the peak travelling period.

The Mobility Department has also implemented several proactive interventions to enhance road safety:

  • Ministerial round table on road safety: Key stakeholders met to ensure a collective, integrated approach to saving lives on our roads.
  • Enforcement deployments: Static and mobile traffic operations along all major routes.
  • Public transport checks: Pre-departure inspections at key hubs to ensure roadworthiness and driver fitness.
  • Fatigue management interventions - at designated rest stops to encourage long-distance drivers to take breaks.
  • Weighbridge and in-transit inspections: Monitoring speed, vehicle load, and compliance.
  • Public awareness campaigns: Educating residents on safe road use.

Tips for road users:

For Drivers:

  • Never drink and drive.
  • Stick to the speed limit and maintain safe following distances.
  • Take regular rest breaks on long trips to avoid fatigue.
  • Avoid distractions - stay off your phone while driving.

For Pedestrians:

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.
  • Cross only at designated crossings and bridges.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions near roads.

For Cyclists:

  • Wear reflective gear and use lights when visibility is low.
  • Follow the rules of the road and ride in single file when necessary.

For Public Transport Operators:

  • Ensure all permits are in order and route - authorised.
  • Do pre-trip checks on vehicle condition and passenger loading.

Let’s all do our part to make this Easter weekend a joyous occasion and ensure that everyone arrives #SafelyHome.
