Doringbaai, formerly Doornbaai, is a peaceful fishing village on the West Coast, about 8 kilometers from Strandfontein and 300 kilometers from Cape Town. The North Bay Canning Company built a crayfish packing factory in 1925, which gave birth to the small village. Historically, ships and boats travelling the sea-trade route used the bay as an anchor point. Camels were used to transport goods to Vanrhynsdorp at the time.
Unfortunately, the crayfish factory closed in the 1970s, and the building is now a wine cellar and tasting room for Fryer's Cove Wines.
Today, the lighthouse (built in 1963 and replaced in 1993 due to storm damage) serves as a beacon and anchor for locals and tourists alike.
The Doringbaai WCG eCentre is located in the Miriam Owies complex next to the library and was established in 2008, and has served a population of approximately 1900 people for the last 15 years. It also provides services to the nearby towns of Ebenhaeser, Strandfontein, and Lutzville. It serves 15 to 20 people daily and close to 100 people per week.
By providing access to e-mail, the internet, and various government services, the Doringbaai WCG eCentre helps locals communicate more effectively with government and communities worldwide.

The eCentre's daily user base has increased dramatically. Many of the fishermen are now computer literate and use the internet to check the 7-day weather forecast before venturing out at sea.
Angelique Arangie worked as an intern at the eCentre for three years and used her earnings to pursue a Diploma in Education from 2012 to 2015. She is now an Ebenhauser Primary School teacher.
The eCentre also changed the life of Sharifa Martin. After completing her computer training, Vergenoeg Primary School hired her as an Administration clerk.
Doringbaai cannot exist today without the eCentre. Continuous assistance ensures that the doors remain open.
What is heartening is that most of the students who completed the various courses found work or received promotions.
