Get connected at the Noordhoek WCG eCentre

The Noordhoek WCG eCentre, which opened in 2016 operates from the Noordhoek Library in Noordhoek, Veldrif. Everyone in the community benefits from the eCentre because it provides free services and the staff helps with searching for jobs, typing CVs or any other documents, emailing, scanning and making copies. Students use the eCentre to do their school projects and assignments.

The eCentre has grown a lot since its opening, and the staff has helped many community members with skills which led to employment. According to the eCentre manager, Janice, the training they offer helps many of the users with computer literacy, which lead to employment. “We offered Elvinia Links, who only went up to Grade 8 the Basic Computer Training and with those skills, she is now employed at the local White Dove Creche.”

More about Veldrif

The coastal fishing town of Veldrif is situated approximately 145km north of Cape Town and is in the Bergriver Local Municipality. It connects to the R27 road and joins the R399 where the Berg River flows into St. Helena Bay. The name Velddrif came into existence when a farmer, Theunis Smit, took his stock through a drift in the veld, to find grazing across the river. The animals often had to swim across the river. Later, in 1899, a pont was built, which was the only means of crossing the Berg River.

With a population of 17 043, many citizens are affected by unemployment and poverty. Veldrif is mostly a fishing, tourism and salt production village that is strongly reliant on factory employment. Most citizens in the community are employed at the fish and mussels factories. Some of the needs in the community include employment, housing, children and social grants and health services.
