Visit the WCG eCentre in Robertson today!

Robertson is a farming town in the Western Cape located in the valley of wine and roses and at the heart of the longest wine route in South Africa. The town was founded in 1853 and named after Dr William Robertson, a Scottish Dutch Reformed Church preacher who lived in Swellendam.

Robertson is a popular tourist destination, a short one and a half hours drive from Cape Town, and offers spectacular scenery of Victorian buildings, jacaranda-lined streets, rose border vineyards, columns of red cannas, the majestic Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River.

Despite its charm and relaxed atmosphere, the community is in need of jobs, computer skills, affordable internet access, and easy access to online job applications, university applications and bursaries.

Many residents in Robertson work on local farms or in the retail industry, with little to no access to a reliable internet connection and exposure to available online opportunities.

The Western Cape Government's (WCG) eCentre programme was created to address this issue by making information and communication technology available and accessible to rural and underprivileged communities in the Western Cape.

The WCG eCentre programme offers residents of small towns and rural communities a safe place to use the internet for self-development, search for employment opportunities, and create business opportunities.

The Robertson WCG eCentre opened in 2012 and currently offers the following services:

  • Free Internet access
  • Email access and assistance to create emails
  • Online job searches and applications
  • Online university applications
  • Free printing of a maximum of 10 pages per day

The eCentre also provides accredited e-skills training, including an e-Learner Course and International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Course, to provide basic computer skills to citizens who lack experience in using computers.

The course covers fundamental computer information, files and folders, an introduction to Word, spreadsheets, presentations, and ICT communication. Since its establishment, the eCentre has significantly improved lives in the community.

The WCG Robertson eCentre is dedicated to helping and developing the community by offering services that make job hunting, online applications, and typing of CVs effortless.

Ismail Leigh Vlotman, a Robertson IT technologist, life was changed the moment he visited the Robertson eCentre. He began his career by volunteering at the eCentre, afterwards he was given an internship and after completing a few courses at the eCentre he was promoted to assistant administrator. Today he is the eCentre's IT technician.
