Central Karoo Sport Awards Honour Young and Old Sport Stars

27 July 2017

The third annual regional Central Karoo Sport Awards honoured both new sporting talent as well as the more experienced athletes. The awards took place on 26 July 2017 at the Beaufort West Recreational Hall and were presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with Central Karoo District Sports Council.

The Mayor of Beaufort West Municipality, Japie van der Linde, welcomed all athletes and guests to the event and acknowledged the development of the awards over the past three years. He said the most important people present were the nominees, but he also acknowledged the behind the scenes officials, such as coaches and referees. "Welcome to the awards and be proud of the athletes that you are helping to develop" said Van der Linde.

Henrico Vena, an athlete who is currently studying at the University of the Western Cape, informed athletes, specifically the younger guests, about the importance of maintaining a good academic record while also pursuing a career as an athlete. "Despite hardships, I have recently received a bursary from UWC. If it was not for my excellent academic results, I would not have received this opportunity to study as well as play my sport" said Henrico.

Deputy Director at DCAS, Henry Paulse, delivered the keynote speech. "What has happened here over the past three years is phenomenal" he said about the development of the Central Karoo awards. He also said that DCAS cares about its athletes. Government will continue providing opportunities for athletes, but the athletes also need to put in the work. "You have to show your worth and stand up to be counted",  he said.

The Eden Sport Awards will take place in Riversdale on 27 July 2017.

The Sport Awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our sportspeople. Let us continue to grow and nurture our sporting talent BETTER TOGETHER.
