Franschhoek Pass road construction

5 June 2024

Notice of temporary closure of Franschhoek Pass due to construction works on slip repairs from 10 to 12 June 2024

Franschhoek Pass (R45) between Franschoek and Villiersdorp will be CLOSED between 9 AM and 3 PM on weekdays for construction.

The closure of the Pass will take effect on Monday, 10 June 2024 and will be in place till Wednesday, 12 June 2024. The Pass will then be open (with the proceed-when-safe arrangement and weight restriction) till September 2025.

The works can only be completed with the pass being closed due to the size of the equipment that is used and the size of the working area.

The pass is located between Franschhoek and Villiersdorp. The objective of the closing of the pass is to protect the traveling public from the slips caused due to the severe weather system that hit the Western Cape during the Heritage Day long weekend.

The project was awarded to Roadmac Surfacing Cape (Pty) Ltd in April 2024. The expected completion date is mid–October 2025.

The Department apologises for any disruptions and inconvenience caused by the construction works, and thanks you for your understanding and cooperation. The long-term benefit of the project will be safe and comfortable road infrastructure in this area. During construction, the project will create short-term direct investment in local communities and the local economy.
