Thirteen people died in crashes this weekend on Western Cape Roads.
And drunk driving continues to be a problem. Twenty-eight people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Six others were arrested for alleged false documents and reckless and negligent driving. Three drivers who had their vehicles impounded were among the six people arrested.
Twenty-two alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 261 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. A total of 1 484 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester at 1.48 mg/1 000 ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 10 211 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 557 speeding offences were recorded. Officials issued 184 fines for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 230 950.
