One learner has sustained a serious leg injury and 15 others were taken to hospitals in Malmesbury and Paarl. Although they sustained minor injuries, they are traumatised and are being treated for shock.
A bus transporting about 50 learners from the Anne Pienaar Memorial School in the Swartland, apparently overturned just about 12km outside of Malmesbury as they returned home from school.
Initial reports suggest a brake failure, but MEC Dugmore is awaiting a detailed official report from the department.
A team of officials from the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) district office in the Paarl have rushed to the accident scene and provided emotional support to the learners and families. They will continue to support the school.
Says MEC Dugmore: "I am shocked at this. I want to express my condolences to all the families involved and to the school.
"In reviewing the Learner Transport Scheme, I will particularly apply my mind to introducing stronger safety and security measures.
"I am also awaiting a detailed report from the WCED officials."
