City of Cape Town's Response to Minister Essop's Green Point Decisions

4 January 2007
The City has noted the approval by the Provincial MEC of its request for the rezoning of a limited part of the Green Point Common in order to build the new stadium as well as the confirmation of the Record of Decision to approve the construction on part of the Metropolitan Golf Course site.

The City also noted that the approval has been linked to a proper process to achieve the agreed re-planning of the green space surrounding the stadium. There are plans to use this green space of between 60 and 70 hectares for a sport and recreation precinct as well as an urban park.

"The City is very committed to achieve this objective through public participation including discussions with the Green Point Common Association and other stakeholders," said Mayor Helen Zille.

"The decision will inform Council's consideration of the consent use of the land when it reconvenes on 17 January 2007. It will also inform the City's request for proposals for an operator for the new stadium post 2010.

"This is an important decision in the process of readying Cape Town to play its full role as 2010 host city and semi-final venue while ensuring we leave a lasting legacy in the interests of all Cape Town's citizens," said Mayor Zille.
