Taxi Driver Arrested for attempted Murder and Reckless Driving

25 October 2009
Traffic Officers set up roadblocks at the weekend in the Cape Town CBD, Milnerton and on the M5 freeway and arrested 66 motorists on 169 warrants of arrest for unpaid traffic fines valued at R189 570.

"At a roadblock in Hertzog Boulevard, a taxi driver failed to stop when called upon to do so and tried to run down a Traffic Officer. Officers pursued the driver who headed for the Station Deck. While the taxi was still in motion, the driver jumped over to the passenger side and abandoned the vehicle, which then collided with another taxi that was stationary at the traffic lights."

"The driver tried to run away, but was soon caught. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving and failing to stop when called upon to do so and had three warrants of arrest served on him valued at R5 300", said Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.

He is being held at Pollsmoor Prison until his court appearance today at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
