MEC Londt meets with SASSA Western Cape

14 August 2024

On 13 August 2024, Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt, met with provincial management of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

In this first engagement between SASSA and Provincial Minister Londt, discussions revolved around the relationship between the agency and the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD), challenges experienced by SASSA and ongoing solutions, and the way forward.

“SASSA is a national function and thus does not fall under province’s mandate. But by working with SASSA, we can support our most vulnerable residents. Whenever we receive complaints or queries from members of the public related to SASSA, we escalate these to the necessary SASSA officials to ensure that citizens receive help. As the Provincial Minister, I may also conduct oversight visits at SASSA offices, to monitor services,” explained Provincial Minister Londt.

“I am encouraged that SASSA’s provincial management shares our goal to improve the working relationship it has with DSD. SASSA disburses over 1.6 million grants in the Western Cape. Many of the beneficiaries are vulnerable residents who also seek services from DSD. We will hold SASSA accountable for delivering effective services to beneficiaries and protecting their dignity. At the same time, we believe in taking hands with willing partners in the social services space, because when everyone plays their role, we can ensure the most vulnerable are cared for,” said Provincial Minister Londt.

A commitment has been made for monthly meetings between SASSA and DSD management.

“It only makes sense that we keep the lines of communication open with SASSA because the agency’s work often overlaps with DSD, and we regularly receive complaints or inquiries from members of the public. There are many ways we can support SASSA, and we are willing to do so. We hope this is the start of a fruitful relationship that will ultimately benefit the citizen,” said Provincial Minister Londt.
