On Monday morning, 7 April 2014, Minister Grant will be visiting one of ten schools that will start teaching isiXhosa to Grade one learners.
The pilot forms part of a national experiment to introduce a second additional language in Grade one. The ten schools have opted to extend the school day to accommodate the lessons, probably by about half an hour per day.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has appointed four teachers for the pilot and will appoint a fifth teacher this week.
They will each visit two or three schools to provide the lessons in Grade one.
The WCED trained the teachers in March, as part of an induction programme.
This morning, Minister Grant will be attending the first isiXhosa lesson at Montevideo Primary School.
