From 29 to 31 May 2015, 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 1862 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Nineteen road users, including nine pedestrian, died on the province’s roads.
A total of 1 358 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 24 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester at 1.14 mg/1 000 ml, which was 5 times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 7 205 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 802 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 175 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 244 050.
