The Department of Transport and Public Works started with the patching and resurfacing of the R27 (TR 77) section 1 from Milnerton to Melkbosstrand. The project is set to be completed in early 2016.
The R27 carries well in excess of 50 000 vehicles per day. It forms a vitally important link between the greater Blaauwberg/ Table View area and the Cape Town CBD.
The patching and surfacing of this road would greatly improve travelling quality and extend the life of pavement structures to carry the expected future traffic.
The project includes the following construction activities:
Preparatory Works |
Localised repair work to road surface defects and areas damaged by moles. |
Resurfacing |
A new riding surface will either overlay or replace the existing surface. |
Repairing culverts and drainage structures | This involves the maintenance, replacement and construction of affected drainage structures |
Structural bridge works | Repair, maintenance and rehabilitation of the Diep River bridges. |
Appurtenant works |
This includes the removal and reinstating of road signs, road markings, road studs and traffic control loops where necessary. Guardrails and kerbing will be replaced or constructed where required. |
Traffic Accommodating Strategy
Lane Merging
This will only be implemented along the dual carriageway section between the intersections of Racecourse Road and Sandown/ Tryall Roads with R27 and implies that the two lanes (on either the north or southbound carriageways) will be merged into one lane only.
The length merged will depend on the construction programme and type of construction activity required. Work will commence on the northbound carriageway at Racecourse Road intersection. Work will start on the southbound carriageway once work on the northbound carriageway up to the Sandown/ Tryall Road intersection is completed. As far as possible, lane mergers will be restricted to non-peak hours on each carriageway.
Partial Width Construction
This will be implemented along the single carriageway section between the Sandown/ Tryall Roads and the Melkbosstrand Road intersections. During construction the full road width will be utilised to accommodate both construction activities and two-way traffic simultaneously.
Intersection Closures
Due to the operation schedules of the MyCiTi bus service, intersections may only be closed for construction at specified times over weekends. Relevant bypasses and/ or detours are to be clearly demarcated.
