The 2024 Sustainable Schools Rewards Ceremony recently took place in Cape Town, celebrating the achievements of schools in promoting environmental education and education for sustainable development.

Pinelands High School earned both the Western Cape and National "Most Sustainable School" titles. The school was recognised for its holistic approach to sustainability, including waste management, biodiversity enhancement, and staff development in environmental education.

Other award-winning schools in the Western Cape included:

  • Battswood Primary School: 1st Place, Biodiversity Network
  • St Mary's RC Primary School: 1st Place, Health and Well-Being and Community and Social Responsibility
  • John Graham Primary School: 1st Place, Energy and Climate Action
  • St James RC Primary School: 1st Place, Water and Sanitation

Special prizes were also awarded to Willows Primary School (Rising Star Award) and Parkwood Primary School (Green Fingers Award) for their outstanding contributions to sustainability.

The Sustainable Schools Programme has had a significant impact on environmental education in South Africa, with 138 schools participating in 2024 and over 226 projects implemented nationwide.

Nature Connect Programme Manager, Jocelyn Anderson, expressed her gratitude to all schools, partners and supporters who have contributed to the programme's success: "We are proud to see how the Sustainable Schools Programme has evolved into a powerful platform for fostering environmental leadership. We look forward to continuing this journey in 2025 and beyond, building on the momentum of this year’s achievements."
