Meet the matric heroes who defied the odds!

Meet the matric heroes who defied the odds!

31 January 2025

In a heartwarming celebration of courage and determination, two remarkable matriculants received Special Ministerial Awards at the Western Cape’s 2024 National Senior Certificate Awards Ceremony.

Christoffel's courage

Christoffel Petrus Lombard, a learner from Hoër Tegniese Skool Drostdy, was born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive illness that threatened to derail his education. But Christoffel refused to give up! With the support of his school, he skipped Grade 9 and continued to excel academically. His hard work paid off with a bachelor's pass and six distinctions, including one in Mathematics.

Onga's unbreakable spirit

Onga Mabusela, a learner from Thembelihle Secondary School, faced unimaginable hardship, including poverty, hunger, and even a devastating house fire. But Onga's spirit remained unbroken! Despite the odds, he matriculated with a bachelor's pass and seven distinctions, including ones in Mathematics and Physical Science. He described himself as a "nuisance and a joy to his teachers, because he was eager to learn, but also questioned every detail”.

These two matric heroes inspire us all with their resilience, determination, and courage. Congratulations, Christoffel and Onga, on your well-deserved Special Ministerial Awards!
