Learning history in a 180 year old classroom
20 February 2025
This year, the Centre for Conservation Education (Education Museum) is celebrating a remarkable 180 years! The museum is housed in the historic building that many may remember as Aliwal Road Primary in Wynberg.
Founded in 1836 as the Wynberg Schools on Industry, the school received its own building in 1845 on Aliwal Road. This building, now home to the Centre for Conservation Education, is not only a cornerstone of local history but is also believed to be the oldest school building still used for educational purposes in Cape Town.
The Museum offers an immersive educational excursion for Grade 3 and 4 learners from across Cape Town, featuring:
Local History: Explore schooling in the Cape Colony from 1837 to 1911.
Role-Play: Participate in a 19th-century school day in a recreated Victorian classroom.
Authentic Learning: Use real learning materials from the era.
Heritage Conservation: Learn about the importance of preserving our heritage.
The lessons cover a variety of topics, including social issues, discipline, teaching methods, and traditional playground games. It’s a unique opportunity for learners to experience history firsthand.
