Grade 9 STEM boot camp: Inspiring the next generation

Grade 9 STEM boot camp: Inspiring the next generation

3 February 2025

Nearly 200 Grade 9 learners from the Western Cape were introduced to coding, robotics and hands-on science activities at a three-day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) boot camp.

Hosted at the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Constantia from 31 January to 2 February 2025, this event gave learners their first experience with STEM — and it didn’t disappoint!

By the end of the boot camp, learners had built prototypes, solved real-world challenges, and presented their ideas with pride.

What happened at the bootcamp?

  • Learners designed smart recycling bins using Micro:bits, coding and the design thinking process.
  • Hands-on Maths and Science activities showed how these subjects can solve everyday problems.
  • Workshops helped learners prepare for competitions and explore how STEM connects to exciting career paths.
  • A session on aeronautics and space programs inspired them to dream big.

Ashric Don, Deputy Chief Education Specialist: Coding and Robotics, said an unforgettable moment was when a group of girls, amazed by an AI robot, asked: “What must we study to build something like this?”

In just three days, these learners discovered teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, and saw how STEM can shape their futures.

A huge thank you to the organisers and partners who made this event a success.
