The Department of Infrastructure builds, repairs and upgrades Western Cape provincial roads. It aims to promote positive socio-economic outcomes and safe, empowered and connected communities with its infrastructure.

Below are major road projects currently underway. Recently completed projects are also featured.

Louis Fourie Road

The intersection at Louis Fourie Road and Beach Blvd West leading into Diaz Strand in Mossel Bay will be temporarily closed due to upgrading of this intersection.

Bonnievale and the R60

Due to maintenance work between the access to Mooivallei and the NG Church in Bonnievale, traffic will be controlled by means of a stop-go control system.

Franschhoek Pass

The Franschhoek Pass which connects Franschhoek and the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp has been reopened to selected categories of motor vehicles.

R328 and R102 in Hartenbos

R46 between Wolseley and Touwsrivier

The project provides for the periodic maintenance on the road between Wolseley and Ceres (TR22/1 from km 20.6 to km 36.05) and between Ceres and Touwsrivier (TR22/2 from km 3.55 to km 71.8) a considerable stretch of road.

Louis Fourie project

This is the largest provincial infrastructure project in the area and is aimed at improving the traffic flow in this growing coastal town.

Franschhoek Pass

The Franschhoek Pass which connects Franschhoek and the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp has been reopened to selected categories of motor vehicles.

Clarence Drive

This scenic route which is a vital economic connector between Gordon’s Bay and the coastal towns of Rooi Els, Betty’s Bay, and Pringle Bay suffered serious damage as a result of a number of significant landslips and rockslides

Refinery Interchange upgrade

The project, which started in September 2021, is expected to be completed in February 2024.


Hemel-en-Aarde Road

The Hemel-en-Aarde Road which connects Sandbaai (Hermanus) and Caledon has been reopened with Stop-and-Go traffic accommodation.

N2 traffic signal repairs

Unfortunately significant vandalism/theft took place because the sites were without electricity for such an extended period of time.

Citrusdal (R303)

The Citrusdal R303 was one of the worst affected roads during the recent floods in the area. Late Saturday afternoon the R303 was reopened to traffic.

Maalgate Bridge

The project is now expected to reach practical completion in November 2023.

Saldanha IDZ Road

The project, which is expected to reach practical completion in March 2023, is creating employment for 27 permanent and two temporary workers.

Baden Powell Drive between Lynedoch and MR177

News: The project is the final phase of the upgrade of the R310 – Baden Powell Drive.


Spine Road

On Tuesday 6 September, the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, officiated the official reopening of Spine Road to public use, following devastating floods in June.

Cogmanskloof Pass

Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers and Langeberg Mayor Schalk van Eeden cut a ribbon to open the Cogmanskloof Pass in Montagu on 23 July 2022.

Saasveld Road

A temporary gravel surface has been placed on the road and the road will be opened to road users on 1 July 2022.

Roadworks on the R60 and R62 between Ashton and Montagu

The newly completed Ashton Arch is South Africa’s first concrete tied arch bridge constructed using a transverse launching method.

N1 between the Black River bridge interchange and the Plattekloof Road interchange

The project involves removing existing asphalt surfacing, undertaking repairs, patching and sealing cracks where this is necessary, and resurfacing the pavement with an ultra-thin friction course (UTFC) top layer.

Link between Stanford and Hermanus

Good progress is being made on the upgrade of trunk road TR28/2 which provides a direct link between Hermanus and Stanford.

Road structures in Seweweekspoort

Upgrading the causeways will reduce the likelihood of flooding and mitigate the severity of any damage that may occur on this important link road.

R102 near George

We started an 18-month road construction project on the R102 at the Maalgate River Bridge between the Glentana Intersection and the George Airport.

R61 between Beaufort West and Aberdeen

The Department of Transport and Public Works has started a R48 million periodic maintenance project to repair, reseal and resurface a 55 km stretch of the R61 near Beaufort West in the Central Karoo District.

Periodic maintenance is being undertaken on the R46 between Malmesbury and Hermon from March to June 2021.

R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West

The project involves Periodic Maintenance of the high-volume, dual carriageway route between Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

The foundations consist of both spread footings and piles. The main span is just over 48 m and is a structural steel arch with a concrete deck.

R33 between Vredenburg and Saldanha

There will be no overtaking in the construction zones. The travelling public is urged to stick to the speed limits for their own safety and that of the construction workers.

Upgraded Baden Powell Drive

The Baden Powell Drive project worth R283 million was awarded to Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd with a 24-month contract period.

We're currently rehabilitating Trunk Road 33 Section 3 between Oudtshoorn (KM 1.9) to De Rust (KM 35.4).

N7 between Bosmansdam and Melkbosstrand

Two roadworks projects spanning 16 km of the N7: one between the Bosmansdam and Potsdam interchanges (6,4 km); and the other between the Potsdam and Melkbosstrand interchanges (9,6 km).

R44 Gouda Road (Trunk Road 23)

Construction of the R190 million road commenced in June 2017 and its objective was to rehabilitate the Trunk Road 23 Section to make it fit for use by providing a new road surface.

Portion of MR344 (R102) between Hartenbos and Great Brak River and the portion of DR1578 between Tergniet and Wolwedans

This R182 million project started in January 2018 and is expected to be completed by mid-2020.

R60 from the Nuy intersection near Worcester to Ashton, and the R317 (MR287) from Robertson through Bonnievale up to the Cogmanskloof River

The project started in October 2018 and is expected to be complete early in 2020.

Main Road 240 between Vredenburg and Paternoster

This R104 million project is expected to be complete in March 2020, if everything goes according to plan.

R43 between Langhoogte and Worcester through Villiersdorp

This R47 million project is expected to be complete towards the end of 2019, if everything goes according to plan.

The addition of a third lane in both directions will significantly reduce traffic congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest roads.
