On Thursday, 31 October 2024, Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, handed over 144 title deeds to beneficiaries in Saron.

Similar to Mamre, which we have visited earlier this month, Saron is one of twenty-four ‘Act 9 of 1987’ rural areas in South Africa, which meant that residents could not, by law, own land within the area.

Minister Simmers said, “To hand over title deeds in ‘Act 9 of 1987’ areas, such as Saron, is always a very special occasion. The remnants of the past are still very real for many South Africans but handing over these title deeds signifies the beginning of a new chapter for this community, its people, and for future generations.”

The project in Saron consists of 578 properties of which we have handed over the last 144 title deeds today, bringing this project to a close.

Minister Simmers concluded, “I am very pleased that we are able to deliver the last 144 title deeds to beneficiaries in Saron, and I am honoured to share this special moment with the community. The Western Cape Government remains committed to restoring and protecting the dignity of the people of our province, especially our most vulnerable communities.”
