Media Release by Daylin Mitchell, Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works

I extend my sincere condolences to the members of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) following the tragic passing of their leader, Mr Bongani Raneki.

Mr Raneki was involved in a car accident while traveling to the Eastern Cape last night. He died on the scene.

He took over this position following the death of CATA President, Mr Victor Wiwi who was shot and killed in April.

Since my appointment as the Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works, I have committed myself to working with the taxi industry to deal with the challenges they face. Mr Raneki  formed part of the leadership delegations that I have been engaging in my efforts to eliminate violence from the taxi industry across the province.

He was part of the urgent meeting I called with the taxi industry yesterday where we discussed concerns with regards to the ongoing criminal acts of extortion that are taking place in the province.

Mr Raneki was a soft spoken leader whose dedication to the minibus industry was always clear to see.

I extend my sincere condolences to Mr Raneki’s family, to the members of CATA and to the colleagues in the broader taxi industry.

May his soul Rest in Peace.
