Tomorrow, Wednesday 21 October 2020, Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will officially open the newly upgraded Baden Powel Drive.
Construction of the R283 million project commenced in April 2018 with a scheduled completion date of 14 April 2020. The project was, however, delayed due to other linked projects as well as the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The original Baden Powell Drive was constructed in 1970 and consisted of a single carriageway in both directions. Traffic along the route fluctuates considerably with high seasonal and weekend peaks because it is one of the main gateways to the Stellenbosch Wine Route area and a commuter route between Stellenbosch and Cape Town. The route is also utilised by pedestrians and cyclists to access employment and leisure opportunities on the surrounding wine farms and residential estates.
The road has been upgraded to a double carriageway by constructing the new carriageway and a bridge next to the existing road.
Details are as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 21 October 2020
Time: 10am
Venue: Baden Powell Drive (bridge close to R301 intersection)
There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
