On 29 April 2021 the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) in partnership with The Bicycle Consortium (Qhubeka, Pedal Power Association and Ben Bikes) delivered 20 bicycles to two community-based organisations (CBOs) based in Grassy Park, 15 to Reconnect Youth Development Centre, and 5 to Champions in Action.
Reconnect Youth Development Centre is a programme for learners that are suspended or caught doing drugs at school. The organisation helps reintegrate them into the school system and helps them stay drug free.
There are 18 young people in the "at risk" programme, with 2 team leaders.
Champions in Action is an organisation that provides a feeding programme to the homeless and needy. They have a volunteer programme and a job creation programme to keep Grassy Park clean.
The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) launched the first round of bicycle distributions as part of the flagship Provincial Sustainable Transport Programme (PSTP).
So far, 334 bicycles have been handed over and another 66 are still to be delivered.
The bicycle distribution project will distribute almost 400 bicycles to (CBOs) in hot spot areas. The project aims to remove the transport barrier to help local community organisations maximise their reach and meet the needs of their beneficiaries more effectively. In communities where most of the population can barely afford to use taxis, bicycles are a more efficient way than walking to deliver services that are essential to the community.
