The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) handed over certificates of completion to 19 contractors at the Structured Training Programme Certificate Ceremony in Knysna on 6 September 2024.

The Structured Training Programme forms part of the Contractor Development Programme (CDP) which aims to develop the skills of Western Cape contractors registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in Grades 1 and 2. Contractors are empowered with knowledge and skills through this training resulting in more sustainable businesses.

Contractors who previously attended the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Construction Information Session (CIS) were invited to participate in the 8-week Structured Training Programme, which is takes place in one-week blocks every month over eight months.

"CIS participants were invited to submit details including contractor profiles for further training," says Maxine Thanjekwayo of DOI’s Construction Industry, Innovation and Empowerment component.

"Contractors were then shortlisted, screened and sent a letter (inviting them) to participate in the Structured Training Programme."

Grade 1 contractor Ashwin Petersen attended the 8-week programme in Knysna.

"I started completing my own tenders because of the training I received through this programme," says Ashwin.

"My company was awarded two tenders since I started completing my own documents.”

Previous CDP participant Nomakhozana Mtsha inspired this group of attendees to continue working on their businesses. Thanks to the CDP, her CIDB grading improved from Grade 2GB to Grade 5GB.

"Before participating in the programme, I didn't know much about the tendering process particularly how to determine the price," says Nomakhozana.

"Now I can read a plan and do many other things. I am my own boss."

At the end of the programme, participants were required to complete and submit a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) which formed part of the final assessment. This encourages contractors to structure and file their documents properly and in an orderly manner.

Contractors who successfully completed the structured training programme can participate in the 3-month mentoring programme in which CIDB Grade 3 – 5 GB/CE contracting enterprises are partnered with experienced mentors, and accredited training needs are identified.

If you would like to participate in the CDP please complete the application form and submit it via email.
