Guardrails for Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Infrastructure

The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) recognises that Artificial Intelligence, commonly simply referred to as “AI”, is a global phenomenon that is fast becoming relevant to the operations of the Department and its service delivery, and hence needs to formulate and adopt a position on policy to be prepared for the opportunities and risks that is brings. Governance of AI is a ‘hot topic’ internationally, and there is currently a dearth of regulation in South Africa. The Western Cape Government is yet to form a policy on the approach to AI.

The term ‘guardrails’ is now being used in the technology industry to define the boundaries in which technology change can be executed in a manner that is aligned with organisational strategy, risk, architecture, operational and cyber security requirements. On this basis, the Department recognised the need to develop an initial policy on the adoption of AI.
