Global Wind Day
Global Wind Day takes place annually on 15 June to celebrate wind energy, its power and possibilities, and its meaningful contribution to change a world for which Climate Change is a threat.
In association with Wind Europe and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), national associations and companies involved in wind energy production mark the occasion with events and campaigns before and after.
The SA wind energy view
South Africa and particularly the Western and Eastern Cape have great wind energy resources.
In South Africa the custodian of the wind energy sector is the South African Wind Energy Association(Sawea) which is a Member of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning recently attended the official commercial operational event of the Roggeveld Wind Farm situated on the border of the Western Cape and Northern Cape near the towns of Laingsburg, Matjiesfontein and Sutherland, in the Karoo.
The Roggeveld Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 147MW wind generation from 47 turbines, which will generate approximately 613GWh per year. The Farm, majority owned by Red Rocket, an independent global power producer, became operational at the end of February 2022. Construction, at a cost of R4.4bn, commenced in 2019.
