17 May 2024

Municipalities from across the Western Cape convened today at the Lambert’s Bay Sports Hall for the Provincial Public Participation Forum, a bi-annual event hosted by the Department of Local Government. The forum serves as a platform for municipal officials responsible for ward committees and public participation to share insights and best practices.

Councilor John Hayes, Speaker of the Cederberg Municipality, emphasized the Forum's role in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. Municipal representatives engaged in interactive sessions and workshops, showcasing innovative approaches to public participation.

Ward committee officials from various municipalities and representatives from South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Western Cape, Government Communication and  Information System (GCIS), and Department of Cooperative Governance (DCOG) attended, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing public participation initiatives.

The Forum reaffirmed the importance of citizen engagement in decision-making processes and highlighted the value of collaboration in addressing challenges. As municipalities work together, the spirit of cooperation and innovation remains central to governance in the Western Cape.
